The College Hall, built over hundred years ago was by far one of the most elegant auditoriums amongst the schools at that time. The building has stood the test of time despite the fact that the hall by the sea has had its inevitable disadvantages. The College Hall, to every Thomian who is a product of Mount Lavinia is a revered building where the College Assembly was held,Drama and Literary Society Events took place and most importantly, the Annual Prize-Giving which was held with a high standard of refinement and dignity.
It is also a gallery where the portraits of past Wardens and distinguished Old Thomians are displayed with pride together with panels that carry the names of outstanding students and sportsmen who excelled in their chosen fields. Last year, the bust statue of Canon R.S. de Saram was installed in the Hall as one of the major projects completed by the Centenary Group.
With the College Hall requiring immediate repairs and replacements, Warden, Dr. David Ponniah made a request to the Centenary Group to assist the College in raising the desired funds for this purpose. Without any hesitation the Centenary Group undertook the task and in a matter of weeks the fund raiser was launched with a Letter of Appeal addressed to the general membership of the Group.
It has always been said that the O.B.A. is a God given gift to S.Thomas’, and has risen to every occasion when needed. The Centenary Group is confident that the membership will respond favorably and contribute generously.
In turning back the pages of history, it is appropriate to recall what three Wardens of S.Thomas’ had to say in expressing their feelings about the school.-
Rev. W.A.Stone had this to say:
“Live for S.Thomas’. Do anything for her whenever you are asked to do it. If necessary die for her.”
Canon R.S.de Saram on June 24,1932 said:
“My only wish this morning is that this school which we all love so much, which is our very precious possession, will go on from strength to strength.”
President, Tissa Molligoda appeals to all Old Boys, Parents and Well Wishers to channel their contributions through the S.T.C. Old Boys’ Centenary Group which has opened a separate bank account for receiving donations.
The Chairman of the Project, Lincoln Fernando will ensure that every contribution will be acknowledged with an official receipt.
Let us also reflect on what Mr.W. M. N.de Alwis, the fifteenth Warden of S.Thomas’ had to say:
“When you help the College, please do not expect anything in return. We all owe the College something. The College does not owe anything to us. May we contribute together to its glory,”
Here’s hoping you will give generously and cheerfully to the school that has done so much!
