S. THOMAS’ COLLEGE OLD BOYS’ CENTENARY GROUP
FOREWORD
At the 29th Annual General Meeting of the S. Thomas’ College Old boys’ Centenary Group held on 8th March, 2014 at the Berjaya Beach Hotel, Mount Lavinia a mandate was given to the Centenary Group, Executive Committee to propose suitable amendments to the present Constitution, particularly to admit those above 65 years of age as members so as to ensure the continuity of the Centenary Group.
Accordingly, the recommendation of the executive Committee were submitted to the 30th Annual General Meeting held on 7th March, 2015 at the Berjaya Beach Hotel, Mount Lavinia and approved.
These amendments recommended by the Ex-Co. and approved at the Annual General Meeting, are as follows-
Amendment (i)
ln para 2(a), after “1951” by the addition of “and with effect from 7th March, 2015, to all old boys of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, Guruthalawa, Bandarawela and Prep School, Colpetty who are not less than 65 years at the time joining the Group”.
Amendment (ii)
In para 3, after “1951” by the addition of “and with effect from 7th March, 2015, to all old boys of S. Thomas’ Colleqe , Mourt Lavinia, Guruthalawa, Bandarawela and Prep School, Colpetty who are not less than 65 years at the time of joining the Group”.
Amendment (iii)
In paras 7 and 10, by deleting ‘in the first week of March” and instead adding ” on or before 15th March”
Amendment (iv)
ln para 10, by deleting ‘fourteen (14)” and instead adding “seven (07)”
Finally, our Executive Committee decided to issue to all the members an updated edition of the Constitution incorporating all the above amendments.
The cost of printing was met by Mr. Dayasiri Warnakulasooriya, a past President of the Centenary Group and a present member of the Executive Committee.

THE CONSTITUTION OF THE “S.THOMAS’ COLLEGE,
OLD BOYS’, CENTENARY GROUP”
- NAME: This Group of Old Boys shall be called The “S.Thomas’ College Old Boys’ Centenary Group”
- OBJECTIVES : The objective of the group shall be the following:
(a) To mobilize the Old Boys of the S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia, Gurutalawa and Bandarawela who were students during the Centenary Year, 1951 and with effect from 7th March, 2015 to all old boys of S.Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, Guruthalawa, Bandarawela, and Prep School, Colpetty who are not less than 65 years at the time of joining the Group.
(b) Find ways and means of supporting the Colleges in ways the Colleges may require.
(c) To create fellowship among the Members of the Group and their families.
(d) To sponsor scholarships for deserving students, whose fathers / grandfathers were/are members of the Group.
(e) To assist the Colleges in any ways as the Group deems fit.
- MEMBERSHIP :Membership of the Group is open to all Old boys of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, who were students in the centenary Year-1951, and to all Old Boys of Thomas’ College, Gurutalawa or Bandarawela who were students of those colleges in the year 1951 and with effect from 7th March, 2015 to Old Boys of S. Thomas College Mount Lavinia, Gurutalawa, Bandarawela and Prep School, Colpetty who are not less than 65 years at the time of joining the Group.
- PATRON:The Patron of the Group shall be the incumbent Warden of S.Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia.
- THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE :The Executive Committee shall consist of the following:
(a) The President
(b) Two (2) Vice Presidents
(c) The Secretary
(d) The Assistant Secretary
(e) The Treasurer
(f) The Assistant Treasurer
(g) Eight (08) Committee Members
(h) The Immediate Past President
The Executive Committee shall be responsible for the management of the affairs of the Group.
Provided that, if a Committee member resigns or is incapacitated for whatever reason, or fails to attend three consecutive Committee meetings without an acceptable reason, he may be replaced by a member from the General Membership at the discretion of the Committee.
- MEMBERSHIP FEES:The membership fees of the Group shall be as follows:
Life Membership (local) Rs. 2,000/-
Life Membership (Overseas) Rs. 5,000/-
Membership fees may be amended only by resolution approved at an Annual General Meeting.
- THE SECRETARY :The Secretary shall call Executive Committee Meetings at least once every two months. He shall also call the Annual General Meeting on or before 15th March each year. He shall maintain minutes of all such meetings in a suitable form.
- THE FUNDS OF THE GROUP:
(a)The funds of the group shall be deposited in a Bank approved by the Committee
(b) The Treasurer shall deposit all funds received whether in cash or by cheque to the Current Account of the Group – the name and style of which shall be “S. Thomas’ College Old Boys Centenary Group’
(c) The Treasurer shall issue receipts for all monies received, and obtain vouchers for all monies paid.
(d) The Treasurer with the approval of the Executive Committee shall open savings and / or Fixed Deposit Accounts in any Bank or financial Institution approved by the Central Bank.
(e) All withdrawals from the Current/ Savings/ Fixed Deposits shall be by two (2) signatories-viz The President/one Vice President and the Treasurer.
(f) All payments made shall have the approval of the Executive Committee.
(g) The Treasurer shall be responsible for the management of the funds of the
Group.
- THE FINANCIAL YEAR:The financial year of the Group shall be from 1st January to 31st December each year.
- THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING:The Annual General Meeting of the Group shall be held on or before 15th March each year. The Secretary shall give the members two weeks notice of such meeting. The Quorum for such meeting shall be 30 members. The business to be transacted at such meeting shall be confined to the following:
(a) Adoption of the Minutes of the previous Annual General Meeting
(b) Adoption of the Annual Report of the Executive Committee.
(c) Adoption of the Audited statement of Accounts.
(d) Tabling of Resolutions received by the Secretary at least seven (07) days prior to the Meeting.
(e) Election of the following Office Bearers
(a) The President (who shall have previously served at least two years in the Executive Committee).
(b) Two (02) Vice Presidents
(c) The Secretary
(d) The Assistant Secretary
(e) The Treasurer
(f) The Assistant Treasurer
(g) Eight (08) Committee Members
(h) The immediate past President
(i) To appoint a Hony. Auditor
- SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING :A Special General Meeting shall be called by the Secretary at the instance of l/3rd of the General membership or (forty) 40 Members made in writing, whichever is less. Only matters for which such a meeting is called may be discussed at such a meeting.
- AMENDMENTS TO THE CONSTITUTION :This Constitution may only be amended at Annual General Meeting by written Resolution to be adopted by the house by a 2/3rd majority of members present.
- WINDING UP:The group shall be wound up when there are less than thirty (30) members on roll. Any funds of the Group at the time of winding up shall be donated to S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia.
